DU students lock academic, administrative buildings

OUR Correspondent, DU

A group of Dhaka University (DU) students yesterday locked the gates of administrative and academic buildings to press home their four-point demand, including an end to the university's affiliation with seven colleges. The main gates of registrar building, arts building, business faculty, Institute of Modern Languages, Institute of Education and Research, and social science buildings have remained locked since morning.

Later, university staff broke the locks according to the direction of the university authority

The students want the authorities to accede to their four-point demand that include publishing results within two months of an exam, automating certain administrative system, and banning mass transport on campus.

If DU authorities do not have the capability to solve the problems of 7 affiliated colleges, they should let them go.  The authorities have no rights to play with their career, said Shahrier Rahman, a student of university.

Agitated students also boycotted classes and examinations as part of their protest. Shakil Ahmed, one of the spokesmen, they would continue protest until their demands are met.   Regarding this protest, DU Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani said now there is a student representative body DUCSU. They may press their demand through it. DU authorities do not support such type of movement.
