DSCC launches 15-day anti-mosquito drive

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a house-to-house campaign to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes responsible for spreading dengue. "A special 15-day programme has been launched from today (Sunday)," DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon said while inaugurating the programme to build a dengue-free city.

He informed that representatives of the 57 Dhaka South wards will go from house to house and destroy mosquito larvae. "Our inspection team from 57 wards, accompanied by a health department team, will visit different houses," the mayor said. Khokon inaugurated the drive in front of the Padma General Hospital at Kathalbagan Dhal.

“A team will clean 30 residential and commercial buildings each day. In other words, 1,710 houses will be cleaned every day. So, a total of 25,000 houses will be cleaned to destroy Aedes mosquito in 15 days,” he said.

Khokon said 68 mobile medical teams are working on the ground. They will train the citizens on how to stamp out the mosquitoes.

“We’ve so far provided first aid to 21,057 patients, many of them were suffering from fever,” he added.

Saying that Aedes mosquitoes usually breed in dirty waters on the streets, ditches or houses, Khokon urged everyone to be aware and keep their houses clean.  “We want our city to be free from dengue. Everyone needs to work together for this,” he added.
