PRIYA SAHA’S ALLEGATIONS TO TRUMP

US embassy had ulterior motive: Joy

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ICT affairs adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy yesterday said the US embassy might have an ulterior motive behind the recent claim made by activist Priya Biswas Saha on the minorities in Bangladesh. Joy, son of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, came up with the statement in a post on his Facebook page.

Saha, organising secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad, told US president Donald Trump that minority communities in Bangladesh were subjected to persecution.  She spoke to the US president during the Second Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom held in Washington from July 16 to July 18.

Saha told Trump that 37 million Hindus, Buddhists and Christians had disappeared from Bangladesh. She also told the US president that her land had been grabbed by Muslim fundamentalists and sought his help so that members of minority communities could live in Bangladesh.

Criticising the US embassy, Joy said: “Saha was the member of a delegation selected by the US embassy in Dhaka. After facing much criticism, the US embassy finally issued a statement today (Sunday). It stated they do not restrict participants, which is fine. But why would they not refute an obviously false and outrageous statement made by one of their selected participants to their own head of state?” “This tells me that the US embassy is the one with an ulterior motive here. It picked Priya Saha because they knew she would make this outrageous statement. The only logical outcome of making such a claim to the US president is to build demand for a military intervention in the region on humanitarian grounds. This is similar to another US Congressman’s recent statement that Bangladesh should take over Rakhine state,” he also said.

“She claimed that 3.70 lakh minorities have disappeared in this country. That is more than ten times the number of our martyrs in the Liberation War or almost as many people killed in World War II. How did this happen without anyone even knowing about it? Did 37 million people just vanish without a trace?” he added.

Joy further said: “Fortunately for us, Trump’s administration has a very different policy of non-intervention in foreign affairs. They are also not so stupid to believe such a ridiculous claim.”

Joy alleged that it is no secret that the US embassy is anti-Awami League. “They have always hosted Jamaat and war criminals at all their events. With its support of Priya Saha’s statement, the embassy now appears to be plotting a direct takeover of our country,” he added

Earlier, the Sheikh Hasina-led government had said there seemed to be an ulterior motive behind Saha’s claim. Terming her remarks absolutely ‘false’ and ‘concocted’, the government had said they were aimed at tarnishing the country’s image. Delegates from 106 countries, including 40 foreign ministers, attended the meeting at the invitation of US secretary of state Mike Pompeo. Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen also took part in the event.
