Family alleges RAB man ‘abducts’ missing Mirpur trader

Staff reporter, Dhaka

The family of a missing timber trader yesterday raised allegations against an official of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) that the officer was involved in the abduction of the trader.

At a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Nasrin Jahan Smrity, wife of timber trader Ismail, 60, said Rasel Ahmed Kabir, who she claimed work as an official of the RAB Communication and MIS wing, has “abducted Ismail as the duo had previous enmity”.

“On June 19, Ismail had gone out of his Mirpur home at 9am and did not retun home. His mobile phone remains switched-off since then,” said Nasrin.  She claimed that Ismail’s younger brother Khairul lodged a general dairy with Shah Ali Police Station on June 20, but they are yet to get any information on the mssing trader as the police have no idea on his whereabouts.

Nasrin said that Rasel Ahmed Kabir abducted his husband using RAB. About dispute with the RAB personnel, Nasrin said Foyez Ahmed Mintu, father of Rasel, was murdered 35 years ago.  “That time, my husband was an accused of the murder case. He was No. 12 accused but was adjudged innocent by a court,” she said, adding, “Four or Five days before my husband’s going missing, we heard that Rasel was looking for revenge for his father’s murder. Hearing that, my husband wanted to lodge a general dairy but he disappeared before that”. Nasrin said their two children are early waiting for their father’s return. The Independent tried to reach RAB official Rasel Ahmed Kabir over phone for comments, but he did not respond.   RAB Director (Legal and Media Wing) Lt Col Emranul Hasan told this correspondent that they were yet to get any complaint in this regard. “If we get any specific complaint, we will take necessary actions into the matter,” he said.
