Technical education for girls needs attention

Technical education for girls needs attention

It is disturbing to note that enrolment of girls in technical education is not very common due to social taboos and lack of proper information about the prospects of the subject. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, in the last five years, the number of girls writing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams under the Technical Education Board is lower than that of boys. But the number of girls participating under eight general education boards is higher compared to that of boys during the same period.

The role of technical education cannot be ignored for rapid development of the country. Social taboos are the main hindrance to enrolment of students in technical education. This is especially true for girls. It is thought that technical education doesn’t provide social prestige. Parents think that the environment in polytechnic colleges is not good. This attitude does not hold much water. Parents should overcome such misconceptions in the interest of career building for their daughters.

Due to lack of adequate technical education thousands of youths in the country are bearing the brunt of unemployment. They are liability for the government instead of assets. Time-befitting technical education and skills can absolve them of the curse of joblessness. There are people who, equipped with proper skills, even do not bother for employments, rather they generate employments for themselves and others.  These people have great demand in their native land and in the global job markets.

Women constitute half of the total population of the country and development of the country greatly depends on them. But numerical strength will do little if their participation in the mainstream development activities is not ensured. Women are going ahead defying various limitations confronting them. Their exposure to the different sectors of life, particularly the RMG industry, has opened up a wide avenue for them.

The government should expand and promote the technical and vocational education and training among the youths both male and female for transforming them into skilled human resources. Special incentives can be announced for girls so that they get attracted to receive technical education. Girls’ acquiring technical education properly can help them large-scale participation in the development process of the country.
