Man held for murder after rape of 10th grader

UNB, Madaripur

A man, accused of raping and killing a class X student, was arrested from Madaripur sadar upazila while another was arrested from Shariatpur sadar upazila in a case field over the rape of a grade VII madrasa girl, and two separate cases were filed at Sreenagar Police Station on Friday and yesterday over the rapes of two teenage girls in the upazila of Munsiganj district. In Madaripur, "A RAB team raided the area and arrested Sajjad Hossain, 45, from his house at Charnachana village around 5am," Atika Islam, additional director of RAB-8 Madaripur camp, told the media.

RAB said Sajjad, an auto-rickshaw driver by profession and a resident of the village, had confessed to his crimes. He was handed over to the Sadar Model Police Station in the afternoon. On July 11, the victim, 14-year-old Dipty, had gotten on Sajjad's vehicle when returning home to Charmuguria from her sister's house. She was the only passenger when the vehicle reached East Khagdi area where the driver lived.

Sajjad forcefully took her to his house where he sedated and raped the girl. But at one stage, when Dipty fell ill, he strangled her. He tied bricks to her neck and put the body in a sack before dumping it in a nearby pond.

Two days later, locals saw the body floating in the pond and contacted police. The victim's family identified the body from her clothes.

Her family filed a case with Sadar Model Police Station on July 14.

In Shariatpur, a man was arrested from the Sadar upazila yesterday noon in a case field over the rape of a grade VII madrasa girl.

Police identified the arrestee as van driver Delwar Chipai, 37, son of Ismail Chapai of Dakshin Mahamudpur village in the upazila.

The 14-year-old victim said the incident took place on May 28. She said she had gone to take a bath at a neighbour's tube-well during rain. The tube-well was tin-fenced and the house was empty at that time.

Delwar took advantage of the situation and raped her. He also threatened to kill the girl if she disclosed the matter. The victim was hospitalised on July 16 after she fell sick. "Doctors said I was two months pregnant," she said. Her father said he had filed a case against Delwar and demanded exemplary punishment.

Md Aslam Uddin, officer-in-charge of Palang Model Police Station, said they have arrested the accused and sent the girl for medical tests.

Meanwhile in Munshiganj, two separate cases were filed at Sreenagar Police Station on Friday and yesterday over the rapes of two teenage girls in the upazila.

In Baghra union, a 14-year-old girl was raped by Mamun, 42, at Talukdarbari on Wednesday. Locals said the girl works as a domestic help. She went to bring papaya from the orchard when Mamun took her to a nearby bush and raped her.

Locals rescued her hearing her screams but Mamun fled. Later, the victim's mother filed a case with police on Friday.

In Kukutia union, 50-year-old Azizul Sheikh of Nagarvag area raped a 15-year-old girl repeatedly on false promise of marriage. He last raped the girl on July 11. Since then, the victim has been asking him to marry her but he was dawdling. Later, the victim's brother filed a case at the police station.
