Four lynched in three districts

Three people, including a woman, were beaten to death by angry mobs in Dhaka, Narayanganj and Moulvibazar yesterday after they were suspected to be child lifters. In Dhaka, an unknown woman was killed in a lynch-mob attack at Uttar Badda in the capital in the morning. Inspector Yasin Gazi of Badda Police Station said locals found the woman, aged around 42, behaving suspiciously in front of Uttar Badda Govt Primary School around 8am.

A rumour spread around that the woman was a child lifter, he said, adding that angry people later gave her a good beating, leaving her critically injured. On information, police appeared at the spot, rescued the woman and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared her dead around 10:20am, the inspector

added. A youth was killed and another injured critically in a mass beating at Rasulpur village in Keraniganj upazlia of Dhaka in the morning. Witnesses said locals suspected the two youths to be child lifters as they were trying to talk to a group of children around 8:30am.

At one stage, they caught the two youths and beat them mercilessly, leaving them critically injured. On information, police rescued them and took one of them to Upazila Health Complex while another to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital.

However, doctors at the medical college hospital declared him dead, said sub-inspector Chunnu Mia of Keraniganj Model Police Station.

In Narayanganj, an unknown youth was beaten to death by a mob at Alaminnagar in Siddhirganj upazila in the morning. Witnesses said the youth was found holding the hands of a schoolgirl around 8:30am. As locals asked him about his relations with the girl, he failed to give any satisfactory reply, prompting them to suspect him as a child lifter. At one stage, the angry mob beat him mercilessly that left him critically injured. He was taken to Narayanganj General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, said police.

Meanwhile, another woman was beaten by locals over a child-lifting rumour at Shapla Chattar in the upazila. Locals said the woman, Rehena, went to a house and gave a doll to a child. Later, they gave her a good beating around 9am and locked her into a local primary school. On information, police rescued the woman and took her to Narayanganj General Hospital for treatment under their custody, police said.

In Moulvibazar, an unidentified man was beaten to death after locals suspected him to be a child abductor. The incident took place in Kamalganj area yesterday.

In Cumilla, a beggar was critically injured after he was beaten up by an angry mob at Peyarapur village in Laksam upazila in the morning. Police said Rafiqul Islam, 43, son of Yasin Mia of Manoharganj upazila, was a beggar. Locals saw him with an empty sack and suspected him to be a child kidnapper. They asked him about his identity but he could not give a satisfactory reply.

This angered the locals who beat him up and broke his right leg, the OC said.

Police later rescued Rafiqul and took him to the sadar hospital.

Meanwhile, the police administration yesterday urged all not to take law into own hands by resorting to mass beating suspecting someone as a child-lifter. "Refrain from hearing any rumour and spreading it. Hand over to the police if anyone's movement is suspected to be a child-lifter," the Police Headquarters said in a media release.
