BCL to hold council at JnU tomorrow

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The Jagannath University (JnU) unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of the ruling Awami League (AL), will hold its council tomorrow (Saturday) in order to select new leaders and bring dynamism to the new leadership. On July 7, the BCL central executive committee announced the date of its JnU unit’s second council.

A 21-member council preparatory committee has already been formed. This includes a number of extortionists, expelled activists, criminals and drug dealers who might secure vital posts of the new committee as they continue lobbying with influential leaders, according to sources.

Though BCL central president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani are eager to leave out these elements from the committee, they might still get places due to the influence of a syndicate controlled by former BCL leaders, alleged some BCL activists.

BCL president Shovon said leaders from a criminal background will not have any place in the committee. After a clash between BCL activists on February 3, the central committee had suspended its previous committee.
