SPORTS REPORTER, DHAKA
Bangladesh drawn in Group E
with four strong teams: Jamie

The Bangladesh national football team have been pitted in Group E of the second round of 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers as the draw was held at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Bangladesh are placed in the group alongside host Qatar, Oman, Afghanistan and India. The qualifiers will begin from September 5, 2019 and will take place until June 9, 2020.

Bangladesh will begin their campaign with an away match on October 10 with taking on Afghanistan and then they will play the first home match taking on Qatar on October 15.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh moved into qualifying round outplaying Laos in the pre-qualification matches when they defeated them in their home ground and shared points in own ground.

Forty teams were put in five pots and the seeding for the draw were based on the latest FIFA rankings. Bangladesh were in Pot 5 due to their low ranking. The teams were split into eight groups.

Bangladesh beat Laos 1-0 in the first round of the qualifiers last month to become one of the six teams to join the 34 top teams for the second round of the qualifiers, which serves as a joint platform for both the World Cup and the Asian Cup.

The group winners and four best runners-up (12 teams in total) will advance to the third round of Asian World Cup qualifying.

Those 12 sides will also automatically qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup, with the next best 24 teams competing in a separate qualifying competition to determine the remaining sides that will participate at China 2023.

Jamie Day the head coach of Bangladesh team, who is on leave, thinks that it will not possible for Bangladesh to qualify but he was very excited to know the grouping when he explained his opinion from London over phone.

Jamie said, “It will be a great experience, we are not expected to qualify, as there are four strong teams who are far higher ranked than us but to have India and the hosts in a same group, it is fantastic.”

About the experience of defeating Qatar in the age group competition in the Asian Games and Bangladesh was lucky not be in the group of Japan, Australia, Iran and South Korea  who regularly play in eh World Cup – Jamie said, “Just mind it, Qatar beat Japan in the Asian Cup final. It is very tough group and the other teams have far greater experiences and quality but all we can do  our best and to move ahead.”

“It’s exciting to be in the group stage for the players and will make this experience. We hopefully start our preparation at the end of August.”

Jamie also expecting to play friendly matches as preparation against any international team.
