Tigers to miss Shakib sorely in Sri Lanka tour: Mahmud

SPORTS REPORTER, DHAKA
Tigers to miss Shakib sorely in Sri Lanka tour: Mahmud

Keeping the ensuing series in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh held their first training session with the participation of the eight players under the floodlight at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

Under the supervision of the interim coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon along with his new staff Wasim Jaffer and Champaka Ramanayake, the opening day session started with batting and fielding practice where they practiced by rotation.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Soumya Sarkar batted first against Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman coupled with net-bowler Shafiul Islam and Jubair Hossain Likhon at the center wicket of the ‘Home of Cricket’.

Following their fielding session with Sohel Islam, all-rounders Mehidy Hasan Miraj and Mosaddek Hossain Saikat got down honing their batting skills and techniques at net. Under floodlight, Mashrafe and Mahumudullah Riyad joined in the batting session. Fast bowler Mohammad Saifuddin joined at the fag end of the session. He also batted later on.

Seven players were not present in the practice session. Selectors picked Sabbir Rahman Rumman, Rubel Hossain and Mohammad Mithun for A team series, where they will play the initial two matches of the ODI series along with wicketkeeper-batsman Anamul Haque Bijoy. After the end of the second match, they will travel all to Sri Lanka on July 22 to join the first batch of the team, who will fly to Colombo led by Mashrafe.

It’s learnt from the BCB sources that Bangladesh will fly to Sri Lanka, splitting into three groups, for the bilateral series. The first batch of the Tigers led by captain Mashrafe will leave Dhaka for Colombo on July 20. The second batch from Bangladesh will go on July 22, while the third batch from India will join the team in Colombo on July 23.

Of them, Taijul Islam is in India with BCB XI who will travel with three other officials including computer analyst Srinivas Chandrasekaran. Tamim Iqbal, who is in Thailand, will also fly with the first batch.

BSS report adds: Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will be sorely missed in Bangladesh’s three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, considering his personality and impact and at the same time his performance in both batting and bowling.

Since he established him as the genuine all-rounder, Shakib’s presence means, Bangladesh always get an advantage of an extra player.

But the talismanic all-rounder, who showed a tremendous performance in the World Cup, scoring 606 runs and taking 11 wickets opted out the series as he sought some time off from the cricket. He is due to perform this year’s Hajj asked BCB to allow him the leave.

“Shakib is Shakib. He is the number one all-rounder in the World. So, when he is not playing it affects our team balance. So it’s natural he will always be missed if he doesn’t play,” said team’s interim coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon as Bangladesh began its practice session for the series at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
