20-party programmes in July seeking Khaleda release

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The BNP-led 20-party alliance will launch political programmes at divisional headquarters in July demanding the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. The decision was taken at a meeting of the alliance held at the BNP chairperson's political office in Gulshan yesterday. BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir presided over the meeting attended by senior leaders of the alliance members. However, no representative from Jamaat was present at the meeting. Briefing reporters after the meet, BNP standing committee member and chief coordinator of the 20-party alliance Nazrul Islam Khan said the meeting protested and condemned the confinement of Khaleda Zia in jail “out of political vengeance”.

"The alliance decided of taking political course of action at the city-level including Dhaka to press home the demand to release of Khaleda Zia," he said.

"The nature of the programmes will be determined in the next meeting of the alliance," he added. Replying to a question, he said 20-party alliance is a big power and that the unity of the alliance remains intact and there was no crisis in it.
