JCD factions clash near BNP HQ in capital

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

Member of two factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), yesterday  clashed in front of the BNP central office in the capital. The clash occurred when aggrieved leaders and activists of a faction staged a demonstration in front of the party office around 11:30am. They agitated against the expulsion of 12 now-defunct central commitee leaders from the student front.

At one stage, the protesters also cut the electricity connection of the office. When the situation escalated, members of the two factions were seen chasing and counter-chasing each other on the streets. Five to six improvised bombs were exploded during the clash, said eyewitnesses. At that time, party leaders Khairul Kabir Khokan, Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and Amirul Islam Khan Alim were inside the party office.

Omar Faruk Munna, joint secretary of the now-defunct central committee, told reporters: “We were told that senior party leaders will talk to us before announcing the schedule of the seventh council. But nobody talked to us.”

“We also demand cancellation of the expulsion order of our leaders,” he added.

Earlier, on June 3, the BNP had dissolved the expired committee of Chhatra Dal. It decided to elect the president and the general secretary through a council election within the next 45 days.

On June 22, the BNP expelled 12 Chhatra Dal leaders of the recently dissolved committee for breaching party discipline. The expelled leaders are Bashar Siddique, Zahiruddin Tuhin, Ezmal Hossain Pilot, Ikhtiar Kabir, Joydeb Joy, Mamun Billah, Asaduzzaman Asad, Bayezid Arefin, Dabir Uddin Tushar, Golan Azam Shaikat, Abdul Malek and Azim Patwary.

Earlier in the day, the aggrieved leaders of the recently dissolved committee threatened to continue their demonstration until their demands were met.
