BNP’s Siraj wins Bogura-6 by-election

Our Correspondent, Bogura

BNP candidate Golam Mohammad Siraj was unofficially declared elected in the by-polls to Bogura-6 (sadar) constituency yesterday. Siraj bagged 89,742 votes in the election to defeat his nearest rival and ruling Awami League-candidate T Zaman Niketa who polled 32,297 votes in the polls to 141 centres, said election commission official and Returning Officer, GM Shahatab Uddin. Apart from Siraj and Niketa, Nurul Islam Omar of Jatiya Party, Dr Mansur Rahman of Bangladesh Congress, Mufti Rafiqul Islam of Muslim League and independent candidate Md Minhaz Mondal contested the polls. The Election Commission used Electronic Voting Machines in the polls that started at 9am and continued till 5pm.  Turnout in the election was quite poor as only 34.55 per cent of 3,20,297 cast their ballot yesterday.  The seat fell vacant as BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who was elected from the parliamentary seat in the December 30 general election, did not take oath as MP within the 90 days from the date of the first meeting of parliament.

During the December 30 polls in the constituency, 66.48 per cent votes was cast. In the election, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir bagged 2,07,025 votes while his nearest rival Nurul Islam of AL-backed Grand ALlaince won 40,362 votes.
