US-Bangladesh joint exercise begins in Lalmonirhat

A six-day-long joint exercise by the Bangladesh Air Force and the US Pacific Air Force, titled ‘Exercise Pacific Angel-2019-1’, began yesterday in Lalmonirhat. Air Officer (Commanding) of Bangladesh Air Force Base Birsreshto Matiur Rahman and Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Nazrul Islam inaugurated the event.

A total of 250 members of the BAF, under the command of Group Captain Abbas Ali, and 100 members of the US Pacific Air Force, under the command of Major Christofer Falmer, are participating in the drill. Besides, six doctors from Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand are also taking part.

As part of the exercise, about 2,000 people living close to the BAF Maintenance and Care Unit, Lalmonirhat, are to be given free medical treatment and told how to handle post-disaster medical care.

Engineers from the two countries are also helping locals to renovate and repair damaged and weak structures of five selected schools.

Earlier, a seminar was held on the 'Subject Matter Expert Exchange' (SMEE) programme. At the seminar, chiefs of different government and non-government organisations, as well as specialists of the BAF and US Pacific Air Force, gave presentations on medical treatment and healthcare in post-disaster situations.

It is expected that the exercise will enhance mutual cooperation between military and civil organisations and strengthen friendly relations between the armed forces of the two countries.
