‘Shishu Mela’ attracts visitors in Jhenaidah

The two-day Shishu Mela attracted scores of people, especially primary and secondary school children, in Moheshpur upazila.

The district information office, in association with the Moheshpur upazila administration, organised the fair at Moheshpur Government Model High School. The fair ended on Thursday evening.

Chaired by district information officer (DIO) Abu Bakar Siddique, the final day began with a seminar. Upazila health and family planning officer (UHFPO) Dr Nasir Uddin, family planning department (MOMCH) medical officer Abdul Bari, upazila family planning officer Mohammad Shahjahan and Moheshpur Government Model High School headmaster Jahirul Islam attended the event as special guests.

The organisers said they arranged drawing, dance, acting, music, recitation and debating competitions at the fair. There were 16 stalls from different primary and secondary schools. Government and non-government organisations participated in the fair.

This correspondent visited a number of stalls and talked to some locals. They said such programmes should be held several times a year to familiarise young people with traditional culture, manners and ethics.

College students Naima Sultana and Bithi Biswas said the fair was for people from all walks of life.Upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Shaswati Seal was the chief guest at the fair’s concluding session.

She distributed prizes among the competition winners and participating stalls.

In her speech as the chief guest, Shaswati Seal stressed the need to produce good citizens who would run the country with the skill and efficiency needed to compete with other countries. "A fusion of modern thinking and traditions is needed. Children should study well to realise Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's dream of Sonar Bangla," she added.
