Police HQ forms body to probe ‘graft’ of DIG Mizan

Action underway, says home minister
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The police headquarters have formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations of graft against deputy inspector general (DIG) Mizanur Rahman and submit a probe report in a case filed against him.

Confirming this news, the assistant inspector general of police (media & public relations), Sohel Rana, said further measures will be taken after receiving the probe report.

Meanwhile, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday said that strong

action will be taken against Mizan, saying the process to take action against him is already underway.

While talking to reporters after a function marking the inking of the annual performance agreement of Security Services Division under the home ministry, Asaduzzaman said: “No one is above the law. He (Mizan) has already been suspended.” According to Sohel Rana, the probe committee members are: Mainur Rahman Chwodhury, additional inspector general of police (IGP), will lead the committee. Others members of the committee are: additional IGP Shahabuddin Koraishi and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) super Mia Masud Hossain.

Earlier, DIG Mizanur Rahman alleged that Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) director Khandaker Enamul Basir had accepted bribes worth Tk. 40 lakh—in two phases—from him in exchange of information.

On June 10, the ACC said it suspended Basir and removed him from the probe team investigating the wealth of DIG Mizanur Rahman for leaking a probe report to the police official.

Later, the ACC appointed another director, Manzur Morshed, to investigate the allegation of amassing wealth by the police official.

On May 3 last year, ACC deputy director Farid Ahmed Patwary had interrogated Mizanur Rahman about accumulation of illegal wealth. Later, Basir was given charge of the investigation.

A private TV channel reported recently that Mizanur Rahman gave Tk. 40 lakh to Basir to a get clean chit in a corruption case.

DIG Mizanur Rahman was an additional commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). He was withdrawn on January 9 last year following the allegation of threatening a female news presenter of a private television channel. He had also reportedly married a woman forcibly and tortured her.

Earlier on Monday, the ACC has formed a three-member committee to probe into allegations of bribery against ACC director Basir and DIG Mizanur Rahman. ACC director Sheikh Md Fanafillah is leading the committee that includes assistant directors Gulshan Anowar Pradhan and Md Salauddin.
