Confident Abahani face Marshyangdi today

Local champs hope to qualify next round of AFC Cup
SPORTS REPORTER, DHAKA

Bangladesh champions Abahani Limited will take on Manang Marshyangdi Club of Nepal in the return-leg match of the AFC Cup qualifying round today. The match will take place at the Bangabandhu National Stadium at 5:45pm.

Abahani Limited, with two games still to play of Group E, have bright chance to move into the next stage of the AFC Cup though the rivals Indian team Chennaiyin FC on top by virtue of a better head-to-head record.

Abahani coach Mario Lemos however said at a pre-match press conference yesterday that though his team and the Chennaiyin FC earned as many seven points and as the Indian sides ahead of them in goal difference, they will have to win the match.

Abahani have the momentum of winning their home match against the top side Chennaiyin FC at home ground May 15 to open their chance to fight for the top spot and the coach Lemos said, “It is the biggest game of our club. We cannot lose, we cannot draw, we must win the game. I think our biggest game in AFC Cup is tomorrow. If we win the game we will be in very good position to qualify for the next round.”

Abahani after long time out of any match had an impressive 5-2 win over Rahmatganj in a league match, Mario Lemos takes it as a boost up - “We have good preparation and it is good thing that we have a game (league) two days ago, helped us improve our fitness level, as, we have been out of competition for one month.”

Playing Manang Marshyangdi earlier in away game is an advantage, as Lemos said, “We played them, so we have an idea what they can do tomorrow. We prepared for that and look forward to tomorrow’s match.”

About scoring ability Lemos said, “Some people asking me we got to score lot of goals, the key is to win the games, if we keep being disciplined and keep being organised, I believe we have big chance playing at home.”

Abahani conceding two goals to Chennaiyin FC after scoring thrice, Lemos said, “We worked on that (defense). We need to be little bit compact. What I felt midfield could not really helping our defense.”

Nabib Newaz Ziban, the striker of Abahani who scored two off one goal against Minarva Punjab said, “We have an idea about the opponents as we played against them. We hope for a good show and play for the win.’

Manang Marshyangdi Club’s head coach, Chiring Lopsang said, “We played with Abahani in the AFC Cup last three times, now we have a big chance for us. We qualify for World Cup qualifier as national team, now we want to do it with Abahani.”
