Shahdat praises Shakib, Liton, Fizz for incredible CWC win

SPORTS REPORTER, DHAKA

Former Bangladesh fast-bowler Shahadat Hossain Rajib rhapsodised about the jaw-dropping performance of Shakib Al Hasan, Liton Kumar Das, Mustafizur Rahman behind Bangladesh’s watershed victory over the West Indies in the fifth World Cup match at Taunton on Monday.

Bangladesh won the high-scoring thriller by seven wickets largely thanks to Shakib’s blazing 124 and Liton’s 94.

Citing Mustafizur Rahman’s name, Shahadat said that Shakib might be stolen the spotlight with his spellbinding century but Mustafizur Rahman will be the unsung hero of the game because he truly contained the West Indies below 350.

“The way people heavily criticized Mustafiz on social media for his inconsistent performance especially after New Zealand and England matches, where he failed to put any big impact with his bowling,” said Shahadat Hossain Rajib, who presented Bangladesh in 38 Tests along with 56 ODIs and six Twenty20 Internationals.

“But we have seen a different Mustafiz against the fire-power of West Indies batsmen. In true sense, he was the unsung hero of the match. He got rid of key wickets of on-song Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer along with Andre Russell that actually barred West Indies from a big total of 350 or 400,” Rajib told The Independent.

By thrashing high-flight South Africa, Bangladesh embarked on their World Cup mission in emphatic fashion, from where they paddled somewhat back after losing back-to-back fixtures to New Zealand and pre-tournament favourites England.

By then, the match against Sri Lanka was rained off that spoiled a full-point chance of Bangladesh. In such consequences, the victory against Caribbean side, Rajib said brought them back in the semifinal race again.

He said that he like others is getting a ray of hopes of the top four spot of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. For this, the other batsmen have to contribute to the team beside marauding Shakib.

Giving credit to Shakib, the former seamer said that they have seen a matured and polished Shakib in the World Cup.

“Shakib truly showed his dexterity in the World Cup as a World no. 1 all-rounder. His back-to- back century after back-to-back half-century made him a genuine fighter of the Bangladesh team,” the 32-year-old right-handed pacer said.

“He played no rash shots yesterday and was unfazed at the pressure of the short-ball and fast ball from the Windies’ bowlers. Finally he sailed through the team with Liton Kumar Das in tandem,” he continued.

Regarding Liton, the former medium fast-bowler said that he has good batting skills and techniques so they should keep him in the first choice XI.

“We saw Liton Das in the last Asia Cup in Dubai, UAE, where he showed his weight by hitting century against India. This time we have seen him again,” he said of Liton Das, who stroked 94 off 69 with eight fours and four sixes.

“He gave an ample support to Shakib and batted fearlessly after his advent at wicket. If there would have a little bit chance, he could score another century. I think, the management should keep him always with the team,” he added.

“Liton, Miraj, Soumya and so on will take the charge of the team after the retirement of the key players the likes of Mushfiq, Shakib, Riyad, Tamim and Mashrafe. So, we should handle them with care.”

Finally Shahadat said that they have to beat either Australia or India after beating Afghanistan and Pakistan in the next matches to reach at the semifinals of the World Cup.
