Riva Ganguli visits Moitree Bridge site in Khagrachhari

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das visited the under-construction Bangladesh-India Moitree Bridge-1 and Ramgarh land port here on Sunday.

While visiting the sites Riva Ganguli said, “Moitree Bridge and land port will increase scopes of business besides developing inter-communication.”

Khagrachari Hill District Council Chairman Kongjari Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam, Additional Police Super M M Salauddin, Ramgarh Upazila Chairman Bishwa Pradip Kumar Karbari, Zilla Parishad member Mongshui Pru and Jewel Chakma among other were present.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina jointly laid the foundation stone of India-Bangladesh Maitree Bridge over Feni River remotely through video conferencing in 2015.

The bridge will connect Sabroom, a border town in southern Tripura with Ramgarh in Bangladesh. The construction is supposed to be completed by April 2020.

On the other hand land acquisition for the construction of terminal, offices, godown and other infrastructures is nearly complete.

Woman drowns, another missing in boat capsize

A woman drowned and another person went missing as a small boat with eight people on board sank in the Brahmaputra River in Fulchhari Upazila on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Moyna Begum, 35.

District Fire ServiceandCivil Defence station officer BokhtiarU ddin said the Charmanikgram- bound small boat capsized near Hatuvangarchar in the river around 6:30 pm.

Six of the passengers managed to swim ashore while two remained missing, he added.

Later, Moyna’s body was recovered from the river.

Rapist jailed for life in Sherpur

UNB, Sherpur

A man was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday for raping a girl in Kharkharia village of the Sadar upazila on false promise of marriage in 2004.

The convict, 36-year-old Milon Mia, son of Lokman Hossain of the same village, has been on the run since the incident.

He was tried and sentenced in absentia by the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.

Milon was also fined Tk 1,00,000 for bearing the expenses of the victim’s child who was born after the rape.

According to case statement, Milon promised to marry the victim and raped her for months until she got pregnant in November 2004. When he learned about the development, he fled the area and has since been absconding.

The victim later filed a case against Milon with the tribunal.
