Four policemen closed over ‘torturing’ man in custody

Four policemen of Bogura Sadar Police Station were suspended and closed to Bogura police lines yesterday after they allegedly tortured a businessman in custody.

The accused policemen are Sub Inspector Abdul Zabbar, Assistant Sub Inspectors Earshad Ali, Niamotullah and Constable Enamul Haque.

Bogura Additional Superintendent of Police Sonaton Chakrabarty confirmed the move and said the complaint against the police members is being investigated.

“If we find truth in the allegation against our officers, we will take punitive action,” he added.

Sources said Shohan Babu alias Adar, 32, a businessman living in Sultanganjpara under Sadar Police Station was allegedly tortured in custody by the four police members.

Adar, son of Saidur Rahman of Sultanganjpara under Utter Mor area of Bogura town, was picked up by police from his home on Thursday night following a complaint by his business partner over a business dispute.

Adar alleged that Sub-Inspector Abdul Zabbar put pressure on him to negotiate the matter with the partner. As he didn’t agree with it, police beat Adar mercilessly, leaving him seriously injured. Adar was taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital early yesterday.

When contacted, SM Bodiuzzaman, officer in-charge (OC) of Bogura Sadar Police Station, said they picked Adar over a written complaint by Shati Banu and her husband Bappi Mia. After they reached a compromise over the matter, police released Adar from custody, he claimed. The OC also denied the allegation of physical torture to Adar in the custody.
