Budget will ‘widen rich-poor gap’

Bangladesher Somajtantrik Dal (BSD) staged a demonstration programme yesterday in Sadar Road area of the city rejecting the proposed budget. Member secretary of BSD Barishal unit Dr Monisha Chakrabarti presided over the programme. He said proposed budget will ‘widen rich-poor gap’. A protest procession later was brought out from the programme venue and paraded almost all the main roads of the city.

On the other hand most of the leaders of business community, professional organisation termed the proposed new budget “over-ambitious and not pro-people” and cautioned that it will fail to “reduce poverty”. The budget also be failed to get any special allocation for the disaster-prone areas affected by climate change, the southern leaders observed.

Saidur Rahman Rintu, president of Barishal Chamber and Commerce and Industries and AL leader welcomed the budget and said it is a farmers-friendly budget. He hoped that the budget will focus on development of disaster-porn Barishal region.  On the other hand, Bijoy Krishna Dey, president of Bangladesh Bidi Industry Owners Association and also owner of Karikor Bidi factory said proposed budget will throw 22 lakh bidi workers on the street.  

Ebaydul Haque Chan and Sheikh Abdur Rahim, former President of Barishal Chamber and Commerce and Industries and district BNP president rejecting the budget said it is anti-people and photo session of the ruling party lawmakers in the name of National Budget as it is a total election budget.
