Nazrul Sangeet exponent Khalid Hossain passes away

Ekushey Padak-winning Nazrul Sangeet exponent Khalid Hossain passed away at a hospital in the capital yesterday just three days before the 120th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. He was 78.

He breathed his last at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) around 10:15pm, his son Asif Hossain told the media adding that he will be buried in Kushtia home.

Khalid Hossain, who had long been suffering from cardiac problems, developed kidney and lung ailments, was taken to the NICVD on May 4 last and kept at the coronary care unit.

Born in Kolkata on Dec 4, 1940, Khalid Hossain has been working on recording the original notations of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s songs for five decades.

He also worked as a teacher and examiner of Nazrul Sangeet at the National University, Dhaka University, Rajshahi University, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University and all the education and textbook boards.

Khalid Hossain received the Ekushey Padak in 2000. He also won many other awards, including Nazrul Academy Award and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Award.

Six of his albums are on Nazrul Sangeet, one on modern songs and 12 on Islamic ones.
