Triumphant Tigers: Minnows turning to giants

Triumphant Tigers: Minnows turning to giants

The Bangladesh cricket team won a victory, which bordered on the miraculous, against the West Indies to win their first ever victory in a big league cricket tournament–Walton Tri Nation Tournament also involving the host Ireland. When the Tigers were set the revised target of 210 in just 24 overs in the rain interrupted match few of the pundits were prepared to give them much of a chance. Even many die hard Bangladeshi supporters were of the opinion that hoping for a washout as the revised target was deemed too tough. However this Bangladesh team is no longer the minnows that they were even a few years back.

The mindset of the players was strong and positive. The players did not have any doubts that they would have emerged victorious. At no point in the match did the players look worried. Their body language was always positive. The Tigers played in six finals before today and lost all the six. It was a case of seventh time lucky for them as the saying goes. However luck played only a minor role. This time they believed that they would win and that belief was translated into action.

Saumya Sarkar played a gem of an innings. Sarkar has rarely been the plaudits a player of his rare stature deserves. However he is a player for the big occasion. He exemplified the saying that when the going gets tough the tough gets going. However the surprise package surely was Mosaddek Hossain. He simply toyed with the West India bowlers sending the ball to all parts of the ground and sometimes over the ground. The veteran Mushfiqur Rahim’s comparatively sedate knock put the final touches. No words are enough for the skipper Mashrafe Mortaza. His captaincy was shrew, his bowling incisive and his ability to motivate the players unparalleled.

With nearly 170 million people – fewer only than India and Pakistan among Test nations – an insatiable zest for cricket and improving infrastructure in sport, Bangladesh will hopefully emerge as a major force in world cricket. Cricket has given Bangladesh a positive identity and whenever the Tigers play a game they unite the whole country. Cricket has given an entire generation the inspiration to dream.

The Tigers are going to the World Cup when they are in terrific form. We hope they would sustain the momentum and bring farther laurels for Bangladesh.
