Militants following ‘lone wolf’ attack method: IGP

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The inspector general of police (IGP), Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary, has said that militants are following the "lone wolf" attack method across the world. They (militants) are more prone to leading solo attacks. He said this during a programme of the Crime Reporters’ Association Bangladesh (CRAB) at the police headquarters yesterday (Wednesday).

“Militants throughout the world have now resorted to the 'lone wolf' strategy. Militants are more prone to leading solo attacks, which are nearly impossible to stop. The militants’ activities are under control, but they are yet to be uprooted,” he said.

The IGP said that after the Holey Artisan attack, people have become more aware, and it will be possible to prevent "lone wolf" attacks, if people report possible suspects. Responding to queries from CRAB’s executive committee members, Patwary said there were no threats of attack on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. “However, security has been beefed up throughout the country, including Buddhist-majority areas,” he added.

He said they have met Buddhist leaders and are providing them with security, especially during their rally.

“The Middle-East militant outfit Islamic State (IS) is not active in Bangladesh, but it might have contacts here,” he said while responding to queries on whether any foreign outfits are currently active in the country.

The police chief said: “Militant activities are in control. It was not completely possible to eradicate such activities. Law enforcers have taken stringent security measures so that the Buddhist community can celebrate their main religious festival Buddha Purnima with enthusiasm. People should inform us if they see any suspicious activity. In this way, the ‘lone wolf’ technique can be prevented.”
