8 outlaws get life term for killing 3 cops

A speedy trial tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced eight outlaw party members to life term imprisonment in a case filed for killing three policemen in Bera upazila of Pabna district on July 20, 2010. They were also fined Tk. 10,000 each. In case of non-realisation of fine, they will be awarded one more year of imprisonment.

Other eight accused were acquitted as charges brought against them could not be proved, said Entajul Haque Babu, Public Prosecutor of the Tribunal. However five of them have been died at various times under the trial time, he added.

Lifetime imprisonment awardees are: Johorul Islam, Hashem, Joson Molla, Nizam Fakir, Rafique, Ayub Ali, Shukur Ali Sarder and Jahangir Alam. Of them Johorul and Hashem both are fugitives.  During the judgment time convicts six and three acquitted persons were present at the court.   "All convicts are belongs to the extremist organisation Sarbahara, advocate Babu said.

He further informed that, the Sarbahara men opened fire on three police men at night when they went to hat to collect fuel on the incumbent of Maldar Hat area in 2010, July 20.

Later the police men took shelter near a house, but the Sarbahara men brought them from the house and shot them.  

At the incident Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, Nayek Wahed Ali and constable Shafiqul Islam of Dhalar Char police outfit under Bera Upazilla in Pabna, died on the spot.  However; witness of the incident,constable Rashidul Islam filed a murder case with Bera police station in this connection.      

After the investigation, police submitted charge-sheet to the court against 16 persons. At the end of the argument the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict on Wednesday afternoon.
