4 workers dead in sleep as truck ploughs into house

Four brick kiln workers were killed and four others injured when a wood-laden truck ploughed through a makeshift worker house at Islampur village under Rangunia upazila early hours yesterday. The victims were identified as Mohammad Jafar, 35, Nazim Uddin, 25, Abdul Mannan, 35 and Abdul Monaf, 36, all hailed from Hatiya upazila of Noakhali district.

Imiaz Ahmed Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rangunia thana said the accident took place at Gabtoli area of Islampur village around 4:10 am when the Chattogram bound wood-laden truck ploughed through a roadside makeshift house, made for brick kiln workers after its driver lost control over the steering, leaving four workers dead on the spot.

The eight workers were asleep at the house when the accident occurred.  On information, police and fire service personnel recovered the bodies from the spot and sent to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) morgue.

The injured were admitted to CMCH, police said.

Staff Reporter adds from Dhaka: A university student was killed in a road accident yesterday in college gate area of the capital. The deceased was identified as Fahmida Labanya, a third year student of BRAC University, confirmed Jan-e-Alam Munshi, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.

Fahmida was riding a mobile app based motor bike service. The driver of the bike Sumon also injured but he is absconding, said the OC.

“Fahmida was riding a bike of a ride-sharing company when a covered van hit the bike and ran away. Meanwhile the driver of the bike rescued her and taken to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, where the on duty doctor declared her dead,” the OC added.

Locals and eyewitness said that the incident took place in front of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in the area. The student was headed to the university using a ride sharing service.
