Soumya Sarkar’s record-breaking double hundred piloted Abahani Limited to register an impressive nine-wicket win over Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the high-scoring fifth and final round thriller of the Super League of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) on the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) Grund-3 in Savar yesterday.

By virtue of winning the record-filled fixture, Abahani lifted their coveted 20th title in DPL that achieved List-A status from ICC in 2013. In that sense, the title was third for them out of six editions.

Abahani Limited were circumspect to overhaul the challenging target of 318 set by Sheikh Jamal as they put on 120 for no loss in 20 overs after being scored 65-0 in 10 overs through Soumya Sarkar and Jahurul Islam Omi.

Gradually the duo became ruthless on Jamal’s bowlers. They lambasted them at will and made an awe-struck opening partnership of 312 that placed them at the close door of victory when they were only six runs short of winning what Soumya did in an emphatic fashion with a walloping six.

The Soumya-Jahurul partnership broke the erstwhile 236-run opening stand record of Anamul Haque Bijoy and Nazmul Hossain Shanto, the duo of Abahani who slammed against Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club in 2018.

The partnership broke all the Bangladesh records in any partnership. Mahbubul Karim-Dhiman Ghosh of Chattogram Division struck the highest third wicket partnership of 290 against Rajshahi Division in 2007.

Soumya was aggressive more than Omi. The left-handed opener played 52 balls to make his initial fifty and took only 26 balls to go 100 from 50. Then he surpassed his personal highest of 154 on way to his unbeaten 208 that gave his record to a new height. His four and six laden innings of 153-ball 208 emblazoned with 14 boundaries coupled with 16 sixes. The 26-year-old opener whipped the highest number of 16 sixes that shattered the previous Bangladesh record of 11 sixes set by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Saif Hassan.

In addition, Soumya earlier clouted 209 against Oman in Under-19 Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in June 23, 2012.

Jahurul Islam lashed 100 off 128 with seven boundaries and three sixes before being caught by Shahidul Islam off Imtiaz Hossain.

Earlier, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club opted for batting on BKSP’s batting paradise after being triumphed the flip and managed to muster an imposing total of 317-9 in 50 overs largely thanks to Tanvir Haider’s scintillating unbeaten hundred.

Sheikh Jamal were stumbled by Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s shrewd deliveries when the experienced fast-bowler dismantled Imtiaz Hossain Tanna (15) and Rakin Ahmed (1) with his double strikes while they were tattering at 25 for two.

Fardeen Hasan then attempted to break the knuckles of the Abahani’s improved bowling attack and stretched the total by building up big partnership with fellow batsmen Nasir Hossain and Nurul Hasan Sohan.

Farden added 38 with Nasir (13) for third-wicket and another 20 with Sohan (17) for fourth-wicket stand en route to his 34. Just two runs later, Fardin fell trap of leg before wicket by Mehidy Hasan Miraj. He cracked half-a-dozen boundaries in his 46-ball 34.

Tanvir Haider rescued Sheikh Jamal and led the resurrection through a couple of successful partnerships at his home-like venue, where he brought up as a cricketer. Haider shared 91 with Elias Sunny for sixth-wicket and another 98 with Mehrab Hossain Junior for the seventh-wicket stand that crossed 274-run mark.

Soumya Sarkar accounted for Elias Sunny, who struck 46-ball 45 and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza had Mehrab, who blasted 36-ball 44. Mashrafe completed his four-wicket haul to send Taijul Islam back just two runs after Mehrab’s departure.

Mashrafe conceded 56 runs in 10 overs including a maiden over to pick up his four-wicket bursts. Tanvir then surpassed 300-run mark and finally amassed a challenging 317-9 single-handedly. He was stranded at blistering 132. His classy 115-ball knock littered with 10 boundaries and half-a-dozen maximums.
