3 drown in Padma River

UNB, Rajshahi

Three girls drowned in the Padma River in Bagha upazila on Sunday. The deceased were identified as Jeam, 17, a class XI student of Mirganj College, Esha Khatun, 9, a student of Bagha Government Primary school--two daughters of Zillur Rahman and Shipra, 12, a class VI student of Mirganj Girls' High School and daughter of Shahidul Islam.

Mohasin Ali, officer-in-charge of Bagha Police Station, said the three girls went to the Padma River for taking bath around 12:30 pm and drowned in the river.

Later, local people found the floating body of a girl and then recovered two other bodies conducting a rescue operation. They were taken to Charghat Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.

Schoolboy killed by ‘classmate’

UNB, Cumilla

A schoolboy was stabbed to death, allegedly by his classmate, at Thakurpara road in the city on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Montahin Hasan Miron, 15, a class VIII student of Modern High School and son of Abul Kalam Azad of Bishnapur village in Sadar upazila. Police are yet to disclose the identity of the accused.

The incident took place after Miron had an altercation with one of his classmates near the Maidan Mosque after offering prayer on Shab-e Barat, police said. The two had been at loggerheads for a while. Miron was stabbed indiscriminately following the heated argument.

He was rushed to Cumilla Medical College Hospital but doctors pronounced him dead.

Father detained for ‘killing’ son

UNB, Sylhet

A man from Jaintiapur was detained early Sunday for allegedly killing his one and half year old boy.

Delowar Hossain was detained from his hometown in Laxmipur district, said Khan Md Moinul Jakir, officer-in-charge of Jaintiapur Police Station.

The toddler's body was recovered on Friday from a fish enclosure in the upazila. The child's mother later identified the body and filed a case against her husband with police.

According to the case statement, after having dispute with his wife, Delowar left their house in Khadimnagar area along with their boy on Thursday night. He then killed the toddler and dumped his body in a fish enclosure at Pakhitiki area.

Man held over killing physician

Staff Reporter, Barishal

Barishal police personnel on April 17 arrested a man over killing of Dr Marufa Khanam, Kashipur union medical officer, under airport police station of the city.

 The arrestedwas identified as Mohsin Sheikh, 32.

Sub Inspector Firoj Alam Munshi, investigation officer of the case, arrested him from Patenga police station area with the help of Chattrogram Metropolitan Police and brought him to Barishal on Friday. After his arrest Mohsin confessed to the killing of medical officer.

Restaurant catches fire in Sylhet

An under-construction restaurant was gutted as a fire broke out in the city’s Mirabazar area on Sunday midnight.

Shibul Mohammad Rafi, senior officer of fire service and civil defense, said “The fire broke out at a under construction duplex restaurant at midnight 12am. On information, 3 firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control”.

Rafi said, cause of the fire incident yet to know. Owner of the restaurant is claiming the incident cost his damage of Taka 50 lakh, he said.

After the fire broke-out, a panic were spread around the whole area.
