‘Draupadi Parampara’ and ‘Macbeth’ on separate venues today

‘Draupadi Parampara’ and ‘Macbeth’ on separate venues today

Today, theatre lovers can plan to enjoy two plays at two separate venues in the capital. Theatre (Arambag) will stage its 40th production ‘Draupadi Parampara’ at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha, while William Shakespeare’s masterpiece tragedy ‘Macbeth’, the 34th production by theatre troupe Padatik Natya Sangsad (TSC), will be staged at 6pm at the British Council Library in Fuller Road.

Written and directed by Prabir Dutta, ‘Draupadi Parampara’ depicts Draupadi’s sufferings in patriarchal society by showing her humiliation at the hands of the Kauravas after she was put on bet at a dice-game by Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava.

In the play, Tahmina Akter, Akifa Alam and Yusha Antara play the roles of Draupadi. The other important casts include Prabir Datta, Shahriar Alam, Shangkar Sarkar, Jahangir Kabir and Lelin Firozi.

On the other hand, in commemoration of the World Book Day 2019, the British Council Bangladesh, in partnership with Padatik Nattya Sangsad, is staging ‘Macbeth’ at the British Council Library.

The play has been translated by noted litterateur Syed Shamsul Haq and directed by Sudip Chakraborty.

The destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints—finds its most powerful expression in the play’s two main characters. Macbeth is a courageous Scottish general who is not naturally inclined to commit evil deeds, yet he deeply desires power and advancement. He kills Duncan against his better judgment and afterward stews in guilt and paranoia. Towards the end of the play, he descends into a kind of frantic, boastful madness. Lady Macbeth, on the other hand, pursues her goals with greater determination, yet she is less capable of withstanding the repercussions of her immoral acts. One of Shakespeare’s most forcefully drawn female characters, she spurs her husband mercilessly to kill Duncan and urges him to be strong in the murder’s aftermath, but she is eventually driven to distraction by the effect of Macbeth’s repeated bloodshed on her conscience.
