There are eight upazilas in Chandpur district. Of them, six lady UNOs are working now in six them.
This is a good piece of news for all. It is a fine example of empowerment of women by the present government, say people of the region.
Only two men are working as UNOs in Matlab South and Faridganj upazilas of the district.
Of the six lady UNOs, two have joined Shahrasti upazila and Haimchar upazila very recently, on April 15.
About two years ago, Nilima Afroze joined Kochua upazila as the first lady UNO, Sharmin Akter joined Matlab North upazila as the first lady UNO about two years ago, Kanij Fatema joined Chandpur Sadar as a UNO around the same time as the third lady UNO, and Baishakhi Barua joined Hajiganj upazila 18 months ago also as the third lady UNO.
People told The Independent that they were working transparently and honestly, without any fear or pressure in discharging their duties.
Contacted, headmaster of Omar Ali High School in Raj Rajeswar Char, in Chandpur Sadar, Shafiullah Sarker and headmaster of Hasan Ali Government High School in Chandpur Mohammad Hossain said, “It is a good sign of women’s empowerment at the upazila level. We see no problems for any woman executive to do their administrative work at the upazila level. Rather, we welcome this idea of the government.”
The two headmasters praised Sadar Upazila UNO Kanij Fatema for her efficiency and deft handling of the government’s commitments, while keeping in close touch with the local elite, leaders and Education Minister Dipu Moni.
In Kochua Upazila, Nilima Afroze, the first lady UNO here, has also made a name for herself by her efficiency.
She said, “I am very glad to work with common people of Kochua. We are working honestly and getting confidence working at upazila level.”
Contacted, journalist Abul Hossain, 60, and ex-president of Kochua Press Club, and Rakibul Hasan, a young journalist and the club’s president were all praise for her work.
Several heads of educational institutions in Kochua Upazila were equally appreciative of her work.
In Matlab Uttar Upazila, Shamsuzzaman Dollar and Mahbubul Alam Lovely, two eminent persons of the Upazila, told this correspondent that UNO Sharmin Akter was doing her work diligently in tandem with the local leaders and the MP.
Her role of standing by the people in difficult times, checking unfair means in the public exams, preventing child marriage, dowry cases, conducting drives against ‘jatka’ fish netting in the Meghna river and implementing government schemes and the vision of the prime minister has been widely appreciated.
Locals said, “She faced many attacks from the angry ‘jatka’ fishermen in the rivers but she did not retreat.” She also played a vital role in checking the extraction of sand from the Meghna river bed. She went ahead with courage and successfully drove out the sand mafia. Later, she was rewarded by the higher authorities for her courageous action and role in field administration.
In Hajiganj Upazila, Baishakhi Barua, the third lady UNO, is said to be working sincerely and effectively in the Upazila. In times of any danger, like accidents or natural calamities, she is said to stand firmly by the people, giving them the courage to overcome adversities.
She extends financial and material help to them so that they can easily get back on their feet. Her role in checking child marriage, dowry cases, eve teasing, unfair means in the public exams and holding mobile courts every now and then to keep prices of essentials stable in the markets, drives against food adulteration, social unrest and any malpractices has been praised by the local people.
She says she is so happy to work in Chandpur as “it is a prosperous district”.
In Haimchar Upazila, soon after her joining as a lady UNO on last Wednesday, Ferdousi Begum (a cadre of 30th BCS) assured the people that she would try her best to discharge her duties sincerely and honestly and also help implement the election commitments and the government’s visions. She worked in the Chandpur District Administration earlier.
In Shahrasti Upazila, Shirin Akter joined as the lady UNO on April 18. She is the first lady UNO in this upazila.
In reactions, Shahrasti Suchipara Degree College principal Humayun Kabir and Shahrasti Press Club’s senior vice president Moinul Islam Kajol told this correspondent. “We warmly welcome her to this upazila.” Earlier, she worked as AC (Land) at Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla.
