Staff Reporter, Dhaka, with Our Correspondent, Noakhali
Sonagazi AL chief held

Sonagazi upazila unit Awami League President Ruhul Amin was arrested yesterday in connection with the madrasa girl student Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case. A of team Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) picked Ruhul Amin, also vice-president of the governing body of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa, up from his Takia Road residence in the upazila around 5:30pm, said PBI Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Taher.

With this, a total of 18 people, including eight FIR-named accused, have so far been arrested over the murder of the madras girl.

There are allegations that former principal Sirajuddaula started his wrongdoings during Ruhul Amin's term as vice-president of the madrasa committee. Sirajuddaula had joined the madrasa on the basis of a false certificate in 2001,.

On the other hand, the Islamic Arabia University yesterday annulled the previous managing committee of the Songazi Senior Islamia Fazil Madrasa, and directed that it be run by an ad hoc committee.

Md Wahiduzzaman, Deputy Commissioner of Feni district, said the committee was annulled as its members were ‘involved in Nusrat’s murder’.

A letter has sent to the Deputy Commissioner’s office signed by the university Vice-Chancellor.

So far, the PBI has arrested 18 people in connection with Nusrat’s killing. Among them are former madrasa principal SM Sirajuddaula, AL leader and municipal councillor Maksud Alam, Nur Uddin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim and Abdul Kader.

Investigators of PBI yesterday visited the crime scene of Nusrat murder with accused Kamrun Nahar Moni, adds our Staff Reporter.

Inspector Shah Alam of PBI confirmed the matter to the independent.

The investigators went to the shop from where three burkas were bought and visited the roof of the madrasa where the assailants set fire on Nusrat.

Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa in Sonagazi upazila of Feni, was set ablaze on April 6 allegedly for refusing to withdraw a case filed against principal Sirajuddoula of the madrasa for sexually harassing her last month.

After fighting for her life for five days, the madrasa girl died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on April 10.

Four accused — Nur Uddin, Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Abdur Rahim Sharif and Abdul Quader — reportedly confessed before a court to their involvement in setting fire to Nusrat.

Talking to The Independent, Sharmin Jahan, Assistant Special Superintendent of Police, (CID), said a press conference will be held on the matter today (Saturday) .

“A press conference will be held at the CID headquarters to let journalists know the latest updates on the case. Right now, I cannot give you more information than that,” said the CID official.

Moazzem was withdrawn from his post as OC on allegations that Sirajuddaula, the madrasa principal who ordered the attack, and other influential and local political persons spent a lot of money to change the character of the case.

According to media reports, the CID found that large payments were made to cover up the murder angle and sexual harassment charge. The CID will be probing this and would determine the source of money, if found true.

Of the 18, three have given statements before a court confessing to the crime. They are Nur Uddin, Shahdat Hossain Shamim and security guard Sharif.

In his statement on Wednesday, Sharif said seven persons, including Nur Uddin, Abdul Kader and himself, guarded the gate when the attack on Nusrat took place inside the building.

Sharif said: “The whole thing was planned at a meeting held the night prior to the attack, in the western dormitory next to the madrasa building. Shahadat Hossain Shamim directed us in our work.”

“On the day of the attack, a team of seven people, led by Nur Uddin, guarded the gate from the morning, while Nusrat was set afire inside the madrasa building by another five-member team, headed by Shahadat Hossain Shamim. After the attack took place, they fled the area,” he added.
