At least 200 shops were gutted as a fire broke out at a kitchen market in the capital’s Malibagh area early yesterday. Mahfuz Riven, duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence central control room, said the fire originated at a shop of the market around 5:27am. On information, 12 firefighting units rushed in and brought the blaze under control around 6:35am, he said adding that no casualty was reported.

Meanwhile, Lima Khanam, a duty officer of the fire service central control room, said the fire was fully doused around 9am. However, they were yet to ascertain the cause of fire, she added.

Earlier, on March 30, a fire at Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) market in Gulshan 1 area gutted 291 shops in the adjoining kitchen market and partially damaged another 37 temporary businesses.

Two other major fire incidents in the capital shook the nation this year, the first being a fire in Old Dhaka's Chawkbazar that claimed 70 lives in

February 20, while the second is the FR Tower fire that killed 25 in Banani area on March 28.

Meanwhile, The DNCC is going to form three committees to ensure that all the buildings under its jurisdiction have fire safety measures.

The decision was taken at a views-exchange meeting held at the Nagar Bhaban yesterday with DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam in the chair.

The three committees will be named as Central Committee, Technical Committee and Inspection Committee.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Abdul Hai will be convener of the Central Committee while its members will include the Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate, fire safety specialists and representatives of different business establishments that provide fire safety services.
