Company to run CETP of Savar tannery estate

BSS, Dhaka

Tannery industry owners yesterday agreed to form a company within the current month to manage the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) of Savar Leather Industrial Estate.

The decision came at a view exchange meeting at the Industries Ministry in the capital, said a press release.

Private Industry and Investment Adviser to the Prime Minister Salman Fazlur Rahman along with tannery industry related stakeholders and organisations attended the meeting.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun chaired the meeting while State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Mojumder, among others, was present.

Humayun said that the transfer of tanneries from Hazaribagh is a great success of the present government. “No government succeeded to do this in the past,” he added.

Referring to the fact that the government has completed the work of Savar Tannery Industrial Area, the minister called upon the tannery owners to take charge of running it.

At the same time, he instructed Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) officials to arrange training programmes for the workers of the industrial city.

Salman Fazlur Rahman said Bangladesh is moving ahead with a target to achieve higher growth after attaining the target of 8 per cent growth.

“Leather industry is the second largest sector after garments to achieve this target,” he added.

He said there is a great opportunity to diversify the leather products.

Later, a delegation of the Steel

Building Manufacturers Association of Bangladesh (SBMA) met the Industries Minister at his office.

During the meeting, Humayun said the government will provide all kinds of policy supports to protect the interests of the local industries.

Describing the steel structure as environment-friendly and safe, he said, the government’s support will continue to help the industry.
