The unique leadership of Jacinda Ardern

The unique leadership of Jacinda Ardern

Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, has become a role model of leadership and statesmanship qualities after the recent tragedy at her country.  Her’s is the example to follow at a time  of severe crisis a country faces. We doubt if any leader around the world would have acted in the same manner as she did in the face of what New Zealand faced on March 15. In the wake of a brutal terrorist attack at two New Zealand mosques that killed 50 people and injured scores others, her quick and humane response not only earned the respect of Muslims and other minority populations in New Zealand, her candid stance against white supremacy has drawn admirations from the all over the world.

Her initial response to the attack was a combination of empathy and steel. Her unequivocal declaration that those who were killed in the attack as ‘us’, not helpless victims belonging to a different community, quickly gave comfort to the family members of the victims and the Muslim community in general, now numbering about 50,000 in New Zealand.

She herself visited the families of the victims of the tragedy and embraced female family members of those who got killed. She took no time to call the attacker a ‘terrorist’ and declared that people with extreme views have no place in New Zealand. A couple of days later, she appeared in the parliament expressing her vows that henceforth she would not call the terrorist by his name.

On the sixth day after the attack, New Zealand has passed a law banning owning of automatic and semi-automatic guns, the kind of guns the attacker used in killing the people. Yesterday, by her singular decision, the government of New Zealand broadcast Muslim ‘adhan’ nationwide and observed two minutes silence. This unique way of expressing sympathy to the Muslim community also garnered a sense of unity among all the New Zealanders.

All through these days following the attack, no one has questioned the genuineness of emotion and sincerity of Jacinda Ardern. When she had assumed the office of the prime minister, she was 37 years of old and many doubted her ability to lead her nation. But there are many heads of state in the world who can really learn from what Jascinda did to deal with the aftermath of a terrorist attack. She has emerged as a hero of leadership in our very tortured times.
