Killer bus had 27 cases

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

The Suprobhat Paribahan bus that killed Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student Abrar Hossain Chowdhury was previously booked 27 times for traffic rule violations and also did not have a route permit in Dhaka. Dhaka Metropolitan Commissioner (DMP) Asaduzzaman Mia disclosed the fact yesterday while addressing a “Traffic Awareness Programme” at Mohanagar Natya Mancha.

“The bus was only permitted to run on Dhaka-Bhramanbaria highway,” he said, adding that all the respective authorities were involved in these irregularities.

The killer bus—Dhaka Metro-Ba-11-4135— first hit

a college student, Synthia Islam Mukta, 20, in Shahjadpur’s Banshtala area on Tuesday morning. The bus driver drove recklessly to flee the scene after hitting Synthia and eventually ran over Abrar when he was crossing a road through a zebra crossing.

After the incident, Asaduzzaman Mia said buses of Suprobhat Paribahan will not be allowed to ply on Dhaka streets.

The DMP boss added that the police will work on some issues to bring discipline on city streets. No buses without fitness certificates will be allowed to ply in Dhaka. Moreover, buses will only be allowed to stop at designated stoppages, keep the doors closed, and stop in front of zebra crossings to let pedestrians safely cross the roads. Further, strict action will be taken against any pedestrian if they they become the cause of an accident.

Khandaker Enayetullah, secretary general of Bangladesh Transport Owners’ Association, said they were working to bring discipline on Dhaka roads. “Our main problem at present is the plying of buses on a contractual basis. If we introduce the ticket system, then it will stop,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has suspended operation of all buses of two operators—Suprobhat Paribahan (167 buses) and Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan (29 buses)—till further notice. It also issued a press release on Wednesday requesting the owners and workers of the transport sector to coordinate fully with them so that disciplinary issues on Dhaka roads can be addressed fully.

The BRTA has realised Tk. 12,356,110 in fines by filing 7,128 cases between January 1 and March 19 while conducting mobile court drives. It has also sentenced 15 people to separate terms in jail in the cases.
