AFC U-23 qualifier

Bangladesh face off Bahrain today

Sports Reporter, Dhaka

Bangladesh Under-23 national football team will take face tough challenge in the AFC Under-23 Championship qualifying round when they will take on hosts Bahrain today.  The match will kick off at 10pm (BST) at the Khailfa Sports City Stadium, Isa Town. Apart from Bahrain and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Palestine also were drawn in the Group B.

However, the Bangladesh youth team went to Bahrain with some happy note when in their two practice matches in Qatar, they won the first one by a solitary goal against the Al Shahaniya SC and drew the second match with 1-1 against AL Arabia just before their departure Doha for Manama.

Bangladesh team, who had a conditioning camp in Doha for 10 days as their preparation for the AFC Under-23, have also a match winning impression, as most of the members of this team played in the national sides when they played a FIFA Friendly match in Cambodia and won the match before going to Qatar.

However, might be it would be tough encounter for the Under-23 team when they will face one of the Asian strong sides at their home ground.

Bangladesh have no good record against Bahrain. In their previous meetings Bangladesh conceded 2-0 defeat to Bahrain in the President’s Gold Cup tournament in Dhaka in 1979. Then in 2016 Bangladesh Under-23 conceded a solitary goal defeat to their Bahrain counterpart in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International football tournament. And last time in 2016 the Bangladesh national side drew with the Bahrain Under-23 in the same tournament in 2016.

A total of 44 countries are taking part in the qualifying round splitting into 11 groups when it will also be counted as the 2020 Tokyo Olympic qualifying phase with the champions of 11 group and four best runners up and the hosts Thailand.
