Team effort most important for Tigers in World Cup: Akram

Sports Reporter, Dhaka
Team effort most important for
Tigers in World Cup: Akram

The best team effort is the main requirement to fare well in the high-octane tournament the likes of World Cup, says Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and its Cricket Operation Committee Chairman Akram Khan.

There are experienced players in the squad, having good track record of playing on England condition but Akram thinks that the most important thing is to perform well in the high-voltage tournament in a given day what they are now focusing more on how they can execute their better performance on England condition in the looming ICC Cricket World Cup.

Akram said that they will play a tri-nation tournament in Ireland, whose condition is akin to England and then will have an opportunity for a nine-day extra practice before heading to the 50-over extravaganza event.

“It is yet to finalise. We will soon finalise it through discussion. The players have come back home just now. We will sit with them to discuss individually after their return upon their rest,” said Akram Khan. “Actually we will do what is best for them as we have Ireland tour and then World Cup. World Cup is a big tournament which is more important to us,” Akram told media at his BCB office of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

“It is true that we have some experienced players to the block but the performance in match day is more important. What we have that’s important but the important is that we have to perform there as a team. If you notice you’ll get to see when we’ve performed as a team, we won the match. We’ve to think about so that we can play with our full strength and the player can perform well having remained fit,” he added.

“What happened in New Zealand is that we didn’t well in all departments. May be we did well in a department out of three. In World Cup, there are many experienced players than us in some teams if we think as team. It’s tough tournament, where wickets will be good. Overall, we need a team effort.”

“Those who are senior in the team along with junior all of their performance are equally important for the team’s success in this type of tournament. Hopefully if everything is okay, we can do all well, we will then do better in World Cup in England.”

Citing the performance in New Zealand tour, Akram said that the players’ off-form along with not to play with the full strength team were behind their shoddy performance that was not up to the scrape what they did during their last tour in the islands nation.

He also said that they didn’t do equally well in every department what was the pre-requisite of doing well. Though he tipped the overall performance in New Zealand tour as disappointing, he said that their pre-tournament thoughts what were to do well ‘difficult’ in New Zealand condition.

“Before going to tour to New Zealand, we had a notion that it’s really difficult for us to do well there. We have to play better to fare well in New Zealand,” he said.

“It has been seen that we did not get down with our full strength team what we have. Players were all not in form. Many times it’s been seen especially in Test where opening partnership has been well done. In middle-order, it has not been better,” he also said.

“Actually we did not play what we played last year. So we’ve a disappointment for it. We’ve seen on after which condition the team went there to play the series. Overall, the tour was not in favour of us. Now we’ve a gap. The bulk of the players are plying premier league. There is not much more pressure there. Some senior players are in rest. We’ll sit with them gradually and slowly. It’s important for us to come out of it,” he added.
