Holders Abahani Limited maintained their winning streak as they thrashed Shinepukur Cricket Club by five wickets in their fourth-round fixture of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah yesterday.

In the wake of Abahani’s pace and spin combined attack, Shinepukur Cricket Club managed to set a mediocre target of 204 before the holders what they overhauled with ease keeping five wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.

Abahani Limited made a solid start on way to chase their target as they scored 62 through their opening partnership of Wasim Jaffer and Soumya Sarkar before Soumya’s departure.

Soumya, who came to play his first DPL match with Mohammad Mithun after returning home from New Zealand with harrowing experience, struck 33 before having bowled by Shuvagata Hom. He clattered a maximum and as many boundary in his 57-ball knock.

Nazmul Hossain Shanto joined well-set Jaffer and the way they started, it was deemed, it is a matter of time for the victory of the Dhanmondi-based club but they lost their second wicket of Shanto while they were on 147.

Unlike Soumya, Shanto also missed his fifty. The young top-order batsman was eight runs away from his half-century. He clobbered three fours and a six before getting out for 52-ball 42 off.

To put up the required 49 runs from that position, Abahani mislaid three more wickets. With the pace of Wasim Jaffer, captain Mosaddek Hossain Saikat and Mohammad Mithun walked back to the pavilion.

Even though Shanto missed to clout his fifty, Wasim Jaffer did not repeat the same mistake as he played a fifty-plus knock before his dismissal for 76. The 41-year-old experienced batsman played a patient innings of 76 off 106 deliveries where he sent the ball four times across the lines. Later he was adjudged player of the match for his batting display.

Sabbir Rahman Rumman did the remaining task with Munim Shahriar. The pair shared 32 for the unbeaten partnership that slotted Abahani home. Munim hit the winning boundary when they needed single run from 10 balls. Munim Shahriar was stranded at 21 with Sabbir Rahman Rumman making 13.

Young fast-bowler Shoriful Islam picked up three wickets for Shinepukur, who have to wait for another match to break their losing streak as they are yet to see win though played four matches.

Earlier, Shinepukur Cricket Club got down batting after being put in to bat and lost three top-order batsmen-Sabbir Hossain, Uday Kaul and Shdaman Islam Anik-in the space of 40 runs. Towhid Hridoy attempted to rebuild the innings through making big partnership with Afif Hossain Dhrubo and shared 81 for the fourth-wicket stand. Dhrubo fell two runs short of his half-century. He hit half-a-dozen boundaries and two sixes in his 57-ball knock.

Just eight runs later, Towhid also followed his footstep as he fell to Mashrafe Bin Mortaza off Nazmul Islam Opu for 39.   Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhiman Ghosh (22) and Suhrawardi Shuvo (not out 24) finally gave the total some respectability.

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza led the attack with pace and bowled five overs where he leaked 14 runs but remained wicketless unlike Soumya Sarkar. Spinner Mosaddek Hossain Saikat snapped three wickets, Fast-bowler Rubel Hossain and off-spinner Nazmul Opu claimed a brace each for the winners.
