Bhutan PM to visit Dhaka mid-April

DIPLOMATIC CORRESPONDENT, Dhaka
Bhutan PM to visit Dhaka mid-April

Bangladesh is expecting to ink a number of bilateral instruments during the visit of the Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering in mid-April. “The Bhutanese prime minister will pay a visit to Bangladesh next month at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. A number of bilateral instruments are expected to be signed by both sides related to cooperation on inland  waterways for cargo trans

portation, cooperation in the health and agriculture sectors, and cooperation between the public administration training centres of the two countries for exchange of faculty members as well as training capacity building,” foreign secretary Shahidul Haque said yesterday.

Haque said this after holding the second Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) with his Bhutanese counterpart, Sonam Tshong, at the state guest house Meghna in the capital.

During the talks, both sides discussed an entire gamut of bilateral relations and took stock of the progress in ongoing bilateral cooperation, including in the areas of power, trade and investment, education, tourism, human resources development, science and technology, agriculture, food security, water resources management, climate change and people-to-people contact.

Shahidul Haque, who headed a 19-member delegation drawn from various ministries and departments of the government, told the media that the second FOC meeting would help in further intensifying bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

“Bhutan is a very important and friendly country to Bangladesh. It’s also a member of SAARC. We had a very intense discussion on all aspects of the relationships—trade, connectivity, scholarships and many other issues,” he said.

“We had a very productive discussion before the forthcoming visit of the Bhutanese prime minister, Lotay Tshering, to Bangladesh in the second week of April to strengthen the relationship between the two neighbouring and friendly countries,” he added.

Apart from bilateral issues, the two sides also discussed cooperative frameworks on transit and connectivity, especially under the BBIN framework, which Bangladesh believes is crucial to the future development of the sub-region. Trilateral cooperation between Bangladesh, Bhutan and India in the field of hydroelectric power was also discussed.
