3 killed in 2 districts

UNB, Narsingdi, Sunamganj

Three Awami League men were killed and 15 others injured in separate incidents of violence in Narsingdi and Sunamganj districts yesterday.  In Narsingdi, two people were killed during a clash between two factions of Awami League at Baluchar village in Raipura upazila yesterday morning, which also left 15 others injured. The deceased were identified as Iqbal Miah, 27, son of Ahsan Miah, and Aman Miah, 30, son of Robi Miah. Police said the supporters of local AL leader Faruqul Islam Faruq attacked houses of the supporters of Mirzarchar UP Chairman Zafor Iqbal Manik, also union Juba League president, and opened fire, leaving 17 people, including four with bullets, injured.

Among the injured, Iqbal Miah and Aman died on the way to Sadar Hospital. Confirming the incident, Mozaffar Hossain, inspector (operation) of Raipura Police Station, said that additional police have been deployed in the area. In Sunamganj, a local leader of Awami League was found dead at Islampur village in Sadar upazila early yesterday.

The deceased is Md Joynal Abedin, 50, son of Md Muslim Uddin of the village and general secretary of Jahangirnagar union AL.

Family members said that he might have been killed by rivals centering the recently held upazila election.

Superintendent of Police Md Barkatullah Khan said that Joynal remained missing since he went out of his home around 11:30 am to bring some goods from his shop.

Locals spotted his stabbed body near a road early in the morning and informed police.

On information, police recovered the body and arrested four people in connection with the murder. The arrestees are- Md Selim Miah, 26, Md Sagar Miah, Shahin Shah, 40 and Md Robi Miah, 25.

A team of police led by SP, additional SP Md Hayatunabi and officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station Md Shahidullah visited the spot and talked to his family members.
