Hundreds of students hit the streets to protest against reckless drivers after a student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) was run over by a bus at Pragati Sarani near Bashundhara in the city yesterday. According to witnesses, an Uttara-bound bus operated by Suprovat Paribahan hit the student while he was walking across the road on a zebra crossing near Jamuna Future Park around 7.15 am. The victim was killed on the spot.

The deceased was identified as Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, son of Brigadier General (retired) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury of Bashundhara area. He was a first-year honours student of international relations at BUP.

Hearing the news, students of various private universities blocked the road in front of Jamuna Future Park and also torched a bus in the area around 12.30 pm. The fire was later doused by locals. Traffic movement in the area was disrupted following the demonstration.

The protesters included students from BUP, North South University, Independent University of Bangladesh, American International University of Bangladesh and other universities. They announced that they will again take to the streets today to demand stringent punishment for the errant driver.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner (traffic) Md. Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the incident. “Police have arrested the driver and seized the bus. After the accident, students came to the spot, blocked the roads and vandalised some vehicles,” he said.

Incidentally, the accident came at a time when police are observing Traffic Week to bring discipline on the streets.

Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam rushed to the spot around 11 am and tried talking to the protesters several times. But the students continued with their demonstration even after the mayor assured them that a foot-over bridge will be built at the accident site within the next two to three months and also agreed to their demand for safe roads.

“The students’ demand for safe road is completely logical. I will construct a foot-over bridge named after Abrar in the area. We will also form a committee on road safety that will include student representatives. Give me some time,” Atiqul Islam assured the protesters.

The mayor also instructed the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to cancel the licence of Suprovat Paribahan in Dhaka. “We will ensure that the bus owners are also brought under the ambit of the law,” he added.

UNB adds: at least eight people were killed in separate road accidents in Rangpur, Sylhet, Pabna, Manikganj and Chuadanga yesterday. In Sylhet, a woman and her son were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and an auto-rickshaw on Salutikar-Goainghat road at Satigram village in Goainghat upazila.

In Rangur, three people were killed in a road accident on Rangpur-Bogura Highway in Pirganj upazila. In Manikganj, an unidentified man, aged around 45, was killed after a truck ran over him on Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Shibaloy upazila's Falshatia area. In Pabna, Amirul Islam, son of Amzad Hossain of Naraikhali village in Chatmohor upazila, was killed after two human haulers collided on Tebunia-Chatmohar road at Bhabanipur village in Chatmohar upazila. In Chuadanga, a teenager sustained severe injuries after a pickup van hit him on Chuadanga-Meherpur road in Sadar upazila's Hatikata area and he succumbed on at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.
