Nutritious and safe food for all

At a recently held event on the agricultural transformation of Bangladesh, calls were made to ensure nutritious and safe food for all. This call comes at a time when Bangladesh has shrugged off scenes of hunger, starvation and malnutrition to emerge as a country self-sufficient in food production.

Any hope about food and nutrition automatically brings back memories of the decades after independence, when the country was perennially short of rice, the staple food. Several back-to-back natural disasters plus a famine in 1974 following a cyclone, ravaged the nation, triggering a decade long struggle for survival.

Bangladesh, once known as a country of privation, is now a nation where no one dies due to scarcity of rice. Government initiatives over the last 10 years have ensured enough rice production with the last two years seeing bumper growth. In addition, there have been development of drought and flood resistant rice varieties, making the suffering of the past firmly locked in history books.

However, the focus should now be on safe food because in recent times, uses of harmful chemicals in vegetable and meat industry have resulted in a rise of ailments. The chemicals are used to make the produce look more appealing though the eventual consequence is disastrous. The government has to emphasise on organic items so that farmers are interested to discard chemical- based fertilisers.

As part of the safe food drive, mobile courts have begun labelling restaurants in the capital, which is laudable. Once restaurants are labelled for overall safety and hygiene, a sense of safe food will become the culture. The authority should also disseminate knowledge about nutritious food and tackle the current day obsession with fast food, which is wreaking havoc on health in the West.

While there’s enough food in Bangladesh now, there is also a paradox of plenty since obesity is slowly creeping into our urban middle class segments. Before this turns into a pandemic, there needs to be a conscious effort to make people aware of nutritious food.

One advisable move is to start school level nutrition classes to make them aware of the necessity of healthy food habits.
