One held with smuggled gold

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized smuggled gold and arrested a smuggler from Immigration Check Post (ICP) area at Burimari Land Port in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on Wednesday evening. “On a tip off, a special patrol team from Burimari border outpost of Rangpur 61 BGB Battalion (Teesta Battalion-2) conducted an anti-smuggling raid there, seized smuggled gold with other goods worth Taka 12.27-lakh and arrested the smuggler,” a press release said today. The arrested gold smuggler was identified as Shree Sunil Biswas, 45, son of Shree Harendra Biswas of village Azgara in Nababganj upazila of Dhaka district. The seized smuggled goods included 15.94 ‘Tola’ of gold worth Taka 12.15-lakh, two mobile-phone sets worth Taka 6,500 and Taka 5,712 in cash. Later, the BGB personnel deposited the seized smuggled gold with the government treasury in Lalmonirhat district town. “After filing a case against the arrested smuggler in this connection, we handed him over to Patgram Thana police in Lalmonirhat district,” Commanding Officer (CO) of Rangpur 61 BGB Battalion Lt Colonel Mohammad Shariful Islam, psc, told BSS today.

4-day BGB-BSF conference ends

A four-day coordination conference of high level officials of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) concluded at a local hotel on Wednesday. It started on February 17, said Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Junayid Alam Khan, director of operation of BGB (south-west region). Abu Taher Muhammad Ibrahim, additional director of BGB and also regional commander of north-west region, led a 14-member delegation on behalf of Bangladesh. Yagesh Bahadur Khurania, inspector general of BSF of South Bengal Frontier, led an 11-member delegation in the conference, said a BGB press release. The conference was also attended by BGB’s south-west regional commander, sector commanders, and representatives of BGB headquarters, foreign and home ministries and department of narcotics control. For the Indian side, IGs of North Bengal and Guwahati frontiers, sector level staffs and representatives of foreign ministry and narcotics control department took part. Smuggling of drugs, firearms and ammunitions, border killings, arrests of innocent Bangladeshis, illegal trespassing and various bilateral issues were discussed at the conference.

Re-excavation of Tena-Chhera Khal begins in Shaghata

A 12-km long re-excavation work of Tena-Chhera Khal under Jumarbari union of Shaghata upazila in the district began on Tuesday. Operation and Maintenance Division of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) will implement the work under the project of Re-excavation of Small river, Khal and Water Bodies in 64 districts (Ist phase) at the cost of TK 1.80 crore while Government of Bangladesh will provide the fund, office sources said. Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah formally inaugurated the canal re-excavation work as the chief guest. Later, a discussion meeting was also held on the premises of Jumarbari High School of the upazila with local union parishad chairman Rustom Ali Akando in the chair. Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah addressed the meeting as the chief guest and additional deputy commissioner (Revenue) Tofayel Hossain on behalf of deputy commissioner Abdul Matin, executive engineer of BWDB Mokhlasur Rahman, UNO Uzzal Kumar Ghos, and acting upazila Awami League president Nazmul Huda Dudu were present at the event as the special guests. Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had taken initiatives to re-excavate the canals across the country so that the canals could get its navigability.

Deputy Speaker Rabbi also instructed the concerned including the officials and the contractor of BWDB to do the work with transparency and accountability and complete it properly and timely without any irregularity and criticism.
