Abahani, Russel to clash in key match

The eighth round of the Bangladesh Premier League will kick off today when the holders Abahani Limited, title contenders Sheikh Jamal, Sheikh Russel and Mohammedan Sporting Club will field teams with different aspects.

Abahani Limited will take on Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra at the Sylhet Stadium and obviously the reigning champions are eying to preserve their top spot, as they are leading the points table with 18 from seven matches.

While Sheikh Russel are also in well-off position when they are in third position with 14 points from their last six matches with winning four encounters, and sharing points in two matches but they are still unbeaten.

So it will be very vital match for the Russel, as, for the former treble winners it would be great opportunity to lift them to second position, if they would cross one of the biggest hurdles.

It would be something positive for Russel when they will play the match at their home venue in Sylhet Stadium.

It will be first meeting between Russel and Abahani in this season when the highest times league winners won both the leg of last season’s league.

However, the other match of the day at the Bangabandhu National Stadium between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club will also play their match with different targets when the former are in tough position, as after playing their sixth round match the traditional Black and White could manage only four points.

Mohammedan suffered record four defeats in a row against one win and a draw, so it turned into most vital encounter and they badly need to win at least to survive from the relegation threat.

On the hands, Sheikh Jamal are also in embarrassing position when the former two times league champions could manage only 11 points after seventh round as they won only three matches and drew two and suffered two defeats.

Meanwhile, Mohammedan Sporting Club, one of the most traditional clubs in the country, who are in very awkward position and have been passing through tough time for last few years, saw their worst season this year.

Mohammedan, who have record of winning league title for highest times, could never taste the league  title for last more than one and half a decade. Even they could not celebrate the title of the Professional Football League for once, since it was introduced in 2007.

Lokman Hossain, Director in-charge said yesterday that the days will be changed when they will appoint a foreign coach during a one month interval of the league after the 10th round.
