49 women MPs to take oath today

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The newly-elected 49 women lawmakers in the reserved seats for the 11th parliament will take oath today. The oath taking ceremony will take place at Parliament Bhaban at 10:00am, said a press release issued by parliamentary secretariat. Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is expected to administer oath to the women lawmakers.  Earlier, the Election Commission on Sunday published the gazette mentioning the names of women lawmakers against their respective constituencies.  According to gazette, of the elected women lawmakers, 43 of them belong to the ruling Awami League while four from opposition Jatiya Party, while one is from the Workers Party and remaining one is Independent.

All the 49 women lawmakers were elected unopposed as there were no contestant candidates. After ending the dateline to withdraw the candidature, returning officer Abul Kashem declared them unofficially elected.

The Jatiya Oikyafront, where the BNP is a major partner, will get one seat of 50 women reserved seats in proportionate to their representation in the parliament.

As the opposition alliance that obtained only eight seats in parliamentary elections decided not to take oath and join parliament, the lone women reserve seat remains vacant.
