Staff Reporter, Dhaka
Oikyafront shifts mass hearing
date to Feb 22

The Jatiya Oikyafront will hold its mass hearing over alleged vote rigging in the general elections in the Supreme Court auditorium on February 22. Earlier, the Oikyafront had planned to hold the mass hearing on February 24 either at the Institution of Engineers, Institute of Diploma Engineers, Mohanagar Nattya Mancha or Jatiya Press Club. However, its leaders alleged that they were not given permission to use the desired venue.

Besides, Oikyafront partners and the left-leaning alliance will also be invited to the hearing, which will begin at 10am and continue till 4pm, said top Oikyafront leader Dr Kamal Hossain.

Talking to the media after the bloc’s steering committee meeting at Motijheel, Kamal Hossain said all political parties, except the Awami League and its Grand Alliance partners. will also be invited to join the mass hearing. However, those Jamaat leaders who contested the polls under the sheaf of paddy symbol will not join the meeting.

Seven eminent citizens, led by Kamal Hossain, will hear the election experiences of the opposition candidates who faced huge defeat in the last polls, said Ganoforum general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu. The other panelists will include a former justice, Constitution expert, university teacher and civil society members, he added.

“We want to let the people know as to how they were deprived from their voting rights in the last general election,” Montu said. He mentioned that they shifted the date of the mass hearing as they did not get venue on the day.

The Ganoforum leader further said the Oikyafront candidates, polling agents and family members of those were killed in the December 30 elections would narrate their experiences in the mass hearing. “We want to keep it on record as to what type of election engineering had taken place,” he added.

The Oikyafront’s steering committee meeting was held at Kamal Hossain's Motijheel chamber in the afternoon and continued for more than an hour. Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Abdus Salam of the BNP, Mostafa Mohsin Montu and advocate Subrata Chowdhury of Ganoforum, and ASM Abdur Rab of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal were among those present at the meeting.

Oikyafront and the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance have rejected the December 30 polls and demanded fresh elections under a non-partisan government.

The Oikyafront candidates won only eight seats out of 300 and decided not to take oath and join Parliament.
