Six chargesheeted over Avijit murder

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Law enforcers yesterday prepared a charge sheet accusing six people, including sacked Major Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque, a suspected coordinator of banned militant outfit Ansar-Al-Islam and Shafiur Rahman Farabi, in a case filed with the gruesome murder four years ago of a controversial atheist blogger Avijit Roy.

Monirul Islam, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit Chief came up with the information at a press briefing at the media centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday. Monirul told that the charge sheet was sent to the home ministry for its approval. “After the ministry’s approval, the charge sheet will be sent to the court,” he added. Earlier, Avijit Roy, a Bangladesh-born US national, was hacked to death on a busy road outside Dhaka University when he along with his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya was returning from the book fair on February 26 of 2015.

Bonya was critically injured in the attack. Later, Avijit’s father filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station on February 27. Police investigators said 11 of the 12 militants from the outlawed Ansar-Al-Islam group implicated in the murder took part in the street killing. “Six people have been charged over the murder of Avijit Roy.

The murder took place under the direct supervision of Syed Mohammad Ziaul Huq alias Major Zia. Five other accused are Mozammel Hossain alias Saymon, Abu Siddiq Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid, Arafat Rahman Siam alias Sajjad, Shafiur Rahman Farabi and Akram Hossain Abir alias Adnan,” said the CTTC chief.
