AL to help EC for inclusive upazila polls, says Quader

Staff Reporter, Dhaka

Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said his party will help the Election Commission (EC) to make the upcoming upazila parishad (UP) elections inclusive and hold them in a peaceful manner. “We will extend all necessary cooperation to the EC to hold free, fair and peaceful UP polls,” Quader told reporters at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office. Earlier on Sunday, chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said that the boycott of upcoming local body polls by some major political parties, includin the BNP, was disappointing for the EC. Asked about the CEC’s statement, Quader said: “It's his personal statement. But we will assist the EC to make

the polls competitive.” About the possibility of intra-party feuds at the AL’s grassroots level centring the upazila polls, Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said there was a similar apprehension during the December 30 general election, but it did not happen at all. “Local leaders are engaged in competition in local body elections, and there might be some stray incidents during the polls. But we don’t want to see any ill-competition that will trigger intra-party feuds at the grassroots level,” he added.

The AL general secretary also announced that the party high-ups will take organisational action against the rebel candidates who had violated party directives by contesting the December 30 general elections against the AL-nominated candidates. About the reformation of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Quader said if it does not change its ideology and the outfit’s name, then it will not survive in future.
