Clash over the control of a mosque’s committee

Current, former councillors among 22 arrested

UNB, Narayanganj

Police arrested 22 people, including an incumbent and a former councillor, after 10 persons were injured in a clash over the control of a mosque's committee yesterday. Locals said ward 18 Councillor Kabir and former councilor Quamrul Hasan Munna were at loggerheads over the committee of Dakkhin Nalua Mosque at Nitaiganj Naluapra.

Kabir's nephew Titu was beaten up by Munna's supporters on Sunday night for seeking details of the mosque's fund from the committee. A police complaint was filed but the two groups started fighting before the law enforcers had reached the spot.

Witnesses said Munna’s followers attacked Kabir’s men first. Panic gripped the locality when one of Munna's supporters fired blank shots. Later, more of Kabir’s followers came to the site armed with sticks and sharp weapons.

Ten people, including Kabir, had been hospitalised. The current and former councillors could not be reached for comments. Quamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said two parties had filed separate cases accusing each other.
