Book fair’s spirit to be spread at grassroots: Mozammel
BSS, Netrakona

Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque has said the essence of book fair should be spread at grassroots to instill the spirit of 1952 Language Movement among the new generation. He stated this while addressing the opening ceremony of a weeklong book fair at old collectorate ground at Moktarpara in the district town on Saturday night. “The 1952 Language Movement has united the Bangalee nation that is why we had been able to liberate the country under the leadership of Bangabandhu,” he said adding that Bangalees has embraced martyrdom for the recognition of Bangla as a state language. “This is a unique example of embracing martyrdom for mother tongue,” he said. State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, Mymensingh Divisional Commissioner Mahmud Hasan, educationist Matindra Sarker, police super Joydeb Chowdhury, Muktijoddha Sangsad former district commander Nurul Amin Talukder addressed the function, among others.
It was followed by a cultural function.


14 BNP leaders land in jail
UNB, Habiganj

A court yesterday sent 14 leaders and activists of BNP, including its district unit general secretary GK Gaus and his brother, to jail in four cases filed in connection with violence on the day of the 11th national election. Amjad Hossain, judge of district and sessions judge and special tribunal-1, passed the order when they appeared before the court seeking bail. The court also granted bail to 17 other accused in the cases. The cases were filed in connection with election violence at Tetoiya Government Primary School in Sadar upazila, J K and H K High School, Sawdagar Krishnadhan Government Primary School and Staff Quarters Government Primary School in the district town against BNP leaders and activists.
Among them, the 33 accused appeared before the court today and sought bail.


73 arrested in Satkhira
UNB, Satkhira

Police in a special drive arrested 73 people from different parts of the district from Sunday evening to yesterday morning. Sub-inspector Azam Khan of the Special Branch of Satkhira district police said they conducted the drive and arrested them on various charges and recovered 301 pieces Yaba tablets and 10 bottles of Phensidyl. The arrestees are wanted in various cases, including those filed for planning sabotage and drug peddling, he said. Among them, 13 were arrested from Sadar thana, seven from Kolaroa, five from Tala, seven from Kaliganj, 16 from Shyamnagar, 14 from Ashashuni, four from Debhata and seven from Patkelghata thana.


‘Drug trader’ held with aba
UNB, Natore

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested a suspected drug trader along with 1830 Yaba tablets from Tokia Dhalan area in Sadar upazila yesterday morning. The arrestee is Jalal Hossain, hailing from Charghat in Rajshahi. On secret information, a team of Rab, led by Jayed Shahriar, commander of Rab-5, conducted the drive and arrested Jalal, said a Rab press release. Later, they recovered the yaba pills searching his body.
